1 Timothy 1

  1. What is Paul telling Timothy to do in verses 3-4? Note that verse 4 in the ESV says “stewardship from God”, a phrase that is difficult to capture in translation but regardless, this passage is contrasting speculations from false teachers and furthering God’s kingdom with true faith.

  2. From verse 5 what is the goal of the apostle’s teaching, in other words, what do they want for those they are sharing truth with? And from verses 4-6 what is the outcome of the false teachings? Is there anywhere in your life where you think you are promoting vain discussion, where you could be building God’s kingdom better?

  3. What is the purpose of the law for God’s chosen people (see Galatians 4:19-26, and Romans 7:7)? Galatians 3:10-11 talks about those that do not have faith in Jesus and how they are under the law? Why does Paul say “the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient” in 1 Timothy 1:9?

  4. In verses 12- 17, Paul explains a bit of his backstory while also talking about how God has worked through him and what he has done. List all of the actions and attributes of God that Paul mentions in this section.

  5. On being handed over to Satan (verse 20), read 1 Corinthians 5:1-5 on some elaboration. Paul just means that these people were excommunicated from the church. In this last section, verses 18-20, what does Paul charge Timothy to do?

  6. From this chapter is there anything you need to apply to your life? What stuck out to you the most?
